Representative ABENY Accomplishments
  • Persuaded the State Education Department to return the study of African and Asian history to the elementary school curriculum of New York State.

  • Sponsors educational workshops to upgrade teaching and supervisory practices.

  • Presents speakers at monthly meetings to provide Information on Issues that affect African-American teachers, supervisors and students.

  • Meets with the Chancellor of The New York City Board of Education to discuss issues of concern to African-American educators, students and parents.

  • Honors outstanding educators, friends of education and students at an annual scholarship and awards luncheon.

  • Presents an annual African-American History and Culture commemorative program.  Presents awards to students in grades 2 - 9  for writing winning essays about African-Americans.

  • Offers a Human Service Award Certificate each June to a graduating student in every school in the New York City Public School system.

  • Provides Position Papers to the Black and Puerto Rican Legislative Caucus, on the needs of African-American students.

  • Presents newly appointed Community and High School Superintendents with a forum where they may express their goals, aspirations and needs.

  • Provides individual counseling for teachers and supervisors.

  • Provides a network for Superintendents to obtain needed personnel.

  • Supports the annual Black Music Caucus Gospel Competition.
